Abstract

A yeast culture feed supplement (Diamond V XP Yeast CultureR, Diamond V Mills, Cedar Rapids, Iowa [IA]) was assessed for its impact on disease resistance in the Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. Animals were fed a standard shrimp pellet diet supplemented with 0% (control with 1% grain carrier), 0.5% (with 0.5% carrier), or 1.0% XP ... Read more »

Complementary medicines and the common cold Information for health professionals

National Prescribing Service Limited ACN 082 034 393
An independent, Australian organisation for Quality Use Of Medicines

As the winter months approach, there will undoubtedly be an increase in the demand for drug treatments of the common cold. Three of the more popular complementary medicines that have been used in the treatment or prevention of the common cold are vitamin C, echinacea and zinc. Efficacy, precautions and safety issues with their use are discussed below. Although other agents such as garlic and horseradish are promoted for use in the common cold, there are limited clinical studies investigating their role.

The Scientific Investigation of Ayahuasca: A Review of Past and Current Research

Dennis J. McKenna,¹ Ph.D., J. C. Callaway, Ph.D.,² and Charles S. Grob. M.D.³
The Heffter Review of Psychedelic Research, Volume 1, 1998

Introduction

Of the numerous plant hallucinogens utilized by indigenous populations of the Amazon Basin, perhaps none is as interesting or complex, botanically, chemically, or ethnographically, as the hallucinogenic beverage known variously as ayahuasca , caapi, or yage.  The beverage is most widely known as ayahuasca, a Quechua term meaning "vine of the souls," which is applied both to the beverage itself and to one of the source-plants used in its preparation, the Malpighiaceous jungle liana, Banisteriopsis caapi  (Schultes, 1957).  In Brazil, transliteration of this Quechua word into Portuguese results in the name, Hoasca.  Hoasca, or ayahuasca, ... Application of immunostimulants in larviculture: Feasibility and challenges

ZhouJin

October-December 2003 (Vol. VIII No. 4)

Immunostimulants are valuable for the control of fish diseases and may be useful in fish culture. Microbial pathogens are one of the main problems in the rearing of larvae. It is therefore important to develop methods for establishing microbial control at all stages of the cultivation progress. One possibility is immunostimulation, which includes methods of enhancing the capacities of the specific and nonspecific immune systems. There are many experiments on nonspecific immunostimulation of fish that suggest that the method has considerable potential for reducing losses in aquaculture, both during larval and on-growing stages. So, on one hand, we can say that use of immunostimulation in larviculture is possible. On the other h ... Read more »

Abstract

The stimulation of tumor necrosis factor-a (TNF-a), interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-10 (IL-10) or interleukin-12 (IL-12)-like proteins using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was investigated in tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) orally treated with ß-1,3-glucan (ßG) for five days. The stimulation of each cytokine were determined in the plasma of tilapia orally t ... Read more »

Abstract

Improvement in the immune response to influenza virus vaccination in the elderly represents the primary unmet need in influenza virus vaccination. We have shown that topical application of immunostimulating (IS) patches containing heat-labile enterotoxin of Escherichia coli (LT) enhances immune responses to injected vaccines. We extend these findings and show that LT-IS patch application enhances the antibody responses to influenza virus vaccination ... Read more »

Abstract

During the last decade many improvements have taken place in aquaculture, especially in prawn and shrimp farming. The shift from extensive to intensive and semi-intensive farming has brought about an increase in disease outbreaks, especially by bacteria. To control these diseases, antibiotics have been used indiscriminately. To avoid the use of antibiotics and the development of resistant strains of bacteria, we studied the efficacy of benzalkonium chloride (BKC), a quaternary ammoniu ... Read more »

Abstract

The hallmark of Mycobacterium-induced pathology is granulomatous inflammation at the site of infection. Mycobacterial lipids are potent immunomodulators that contribute to the granulomatous response and are released in appreciable quantities by intracellular bacilli. Previously we investigated the granulomagenic nature of the peripheral cell wall lipids of Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Gue´rin (BCG) by coating the lipids onto 90 m diameter microspheres that were mixed into Matrigel matri ... Abstract

Leukemic B cells from a majority of patients with chronic lymphocytic  leukemia (CLL) enter the cell cycle upon  stimu- lation in vitro with loxoribine,  a potent 7,8-disubstituted guanine  ribonucleoside immunostimulant. Abstract

Fibrinogen adsorbs spontaneously from aqueous media containing that protein to droplets of liquid hydrophobic phases dispersed in those same media. Examples of such phases include mineral oils, straight-chain hydrocarbons, and various plant- and animal-derived oils. Lecithin preexisting on the surface of oil droplets reduces significantly the amount o ... Read more »

Abstract

The effects of fish oil, which is rich in n–3 fatty acids, on cytokine levels in a murine model of acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) were studied. Thirty-two C57BL/6 female mice were divided into two dietary groups and fed either a corn oil diet or a fish oil diet. After 4 weeks, each diet group was further divided into two subgroups, and mice in one subgroup were injected i.p. with LP-BM5 murine retrovirus (MAIDS) stock. After 4 weeks, all mice were kill ...
