Plant Products as Antimicrobial Agents
MARJORIE MURPHY COWAN* Department of Microbiology, Miami University, Oxford, Ohio 45056 CLINICAL MICROBIOLOGY REVIEWS, 0893-8512/99/$04.0010 Oct. 1999, p. 564–582 Copyright © 1999, American Society for Microbiology. All Rights Reserved. Finding healing powers in plants is an ancient idea. People on all continents have long applied poultices and imbibed infusions of hundreds, if not thousands, of indigenous plants, dating back to prehistory. There is evidence that Neanderthals living 60,000 years ago in present-day Iraq used plants such as hollyhock (211, 224); these plants are still widely used in ethnomedicine around the world. Historically, therapeutic results have been mixed; quite often cures or symptom relief resulted. Poisonings occurred at a high rate, also. Currently, of the one-quarter to one-half of all pharmaceuticals dispensed in the United State

Complementary medicines and the common cold Information for health professionals National Prescribing Service Limited ACN 082 034 393 An independent, Australian organisation for Quality Use Of Medicines As the winter months approach, there will undoubtedly be an increase in the demand for drug treatments of the common cold. Three of the more popular complementary medicines that have been used in the treatment or prevention of the common cold are vitamin C, echinacea and zinc. Efficacy, precautions and safety issues with their use are discussed below. Although other agents such as garlic and horseradish are promoted for use in the common cold, there are limited clinical studies investigating their role. Full PDF

The Scientific Investigation of Ayahuasca: A Review of Past and Current ResearchDennis J. McKenna,¹ Ph.D., J. C. Callaway, Ph.D.,² and Charles S. Grob. M.D.³ The Heffter Review of Psychedelic Research, Volume 1, 1998 Introduction
Of the numerous plant hallucinogens utilized by indigenous populations of the Amazon Basin, perhaps none is as interesting or complex, botanically, chemically, or ethnographically, as the hallucinogenic beverage known variously as ayahuasca , caapi, or yage. The beverage is most widely known as ayahuasca, a Quechua term meaning "vine of the souls," which is applied both to the beverage itself and to one of the source-plants used in its preparation, the Malpighiaceous jungle liana, Banisteriopsis caapi (Schultes, 1957). In Brazil, transliteration of this Quechua word into Portuguese results in the name, Hoasca. Hoasca, or ayahuasca,
